The Matter

In 2019 I traveled to Japan on commission for “European Eyes on Japan” with the aim to create a project on Mashiko prefecture. I spent 1 month there exploring the area and photographing the local potters as the prefecture is famous since centuries for the excellent quality of the clay and the ceramists.

“The Matter” starts form the consideration that in mostly of the cultures the legends about the creation of the universe starts from a simple element as mud or similar ones. So I took this as a metaphor to frame the works and the process of creation that the ceramists use to transform clay in object.

This project is an dreamlike travel into Japan culture and exploration that trough the cultural differences try to trace a line in between the west and the east working on a symbolic and unconscious level.
